Carl Dann was born into a poor family in 1885. A man who never passed fourth grade, Carl used his natural business sense and charismatic personality to make up for his lack of education. He founded the Dubsdread golf course, which opened in 1924. The name Dubsdread originates from the era’s slang expression for poor golfers, or “Dubbers.” The “dread” refers to the difficulty of the original course.
During World War II, Dubsdread gained popularity significantly. With over 100,000 serviceman stationed in Orlando, Dubsdread became the unofficial Officer’s Club. This popularity continued after the war was over.
