An Orlando Classic Since 1924
Our historic location shares its legacy with Dubsdread Golf Course, opened in 1924. The name Dubsdread originates from the era’s slang expression for poor golfers, or “Dubbers.” The “dread” refers to the difficulty of the original course. The club became an unofficial officers’ club during World War II, and following the war, the club’s golf reputation grew, hosting the Orlando Open in 1945–47, with a crowd of 5,000 watching Ben Hogan win the 1945 tournament, cementing Dubsdread as the place to be in the 1940s and ’50s.
Today, Dubsdread is still the place to be. Steve and Barbara took stewardship of this place that means something to so many people seriously. Steve recalls an older couple asking to see the fireplace in the ballroom and when they stood in front, both with tears in their eyes, he said, “Thank you for letting us go do that … because we got married in front of that fireplace 63 years ago.”
